Outdoor Theater At Brookgreen Gardens Through Aug. 12
By Helen Benso
Bring your own blanket or chair and enjoy live outdoor theater on Wednesdays through August 12, when the play, “The Story of Alice Flagg,” will be presented at 7 pm, in Live Oak Allee. Probably no ghost story or legend exists among these oaks as long-lived and tragic as the story of Alice Flagg. It is a tale of forbidden love, family secrets, and the social makeup of those who lived in Murrells Inlet more than 150 years ago. The play is written by the local playwright, Lori Lewis, and produced and directed by Brookgreen’s vice president of development, Pat Tukey. (
Entertainment is included in the regular admission to the Gardens. Cruises down the creek are offered all three evenings at 5:30 and 6:30 pm. and are $7 in addition to garden admission.
On Thursday evenings, a nature walk at 4 p.m. followed by the popular evening animal program at 5 p.m. gives kids a chance to burn off energy just in time to settle down for story hour at 6 p.m. There will be a series of guest story-tellers in the Wall Lowcountry Center Program Shed, including Okefenokee Joe’s tales about nature and conservation, Mike Walker’s ghost stories, and others.
On Fridays, the concert series will be at 7 p.m. in the Live Oak Allee. Visit www.brookgreen.org for the complete concert schedule or call 843-235-6000.
